There’s nothing quite like sunrise on an untypically warm autumn morning.Continue Reading
The Soft Landing
The summer of 2013 will not soon be forgotten. In fact this whole year will mark my life like a giant exclamation point in the middle of my story. Memorable is not the right word though. I don’t think there is a word for it. I’ve been thinking for one for the last week or so and nothing exists at least in my thin vocabulary. So…after it all, the downs, and the ups, the lows and the highs – like the week where one of my dreams took flight, and the months where many more vaporized into the void, I’ve landed back here, a little deflated, (the coming of winter doesn’t help) but sensing that my energy is building up again, however slowly – but definitely.Continue Reading
Astounding!
That’s all I can say. I finally got around to working on my mountain photos. I had some time to work on them while at my parent’s this past week. It helped kept me from getting too depressed – but in betweeen business meetings and lawyers etc, photography was a welcome distraction.
Day 2 Rain fog and cloudy views
Spooky and brooding in the fog, the mountains are showing another side to their personalities. It’s a side i like, although one day of sun would make this trip perfect.Continue Reading
DAY ONE
Arrived in Banff to spend one night so I could meet the bus that takes the group to the helipad at 7:00 am. I decided to splurge- so I spent the night at the storied Banff Springs Hotel.
*****
This is a serious hotel! If you saw The Shining (by Steven King) you’ve seen the Banff Springs Hotel! Well not exactly, but it’s of the same ilk as the wicked Overlook Hotel in the movie (and book.) Ultra service – cool architecture, and perhaps even a ghost or two. Unfortunately I won’t be staying long enough to fully explore it but I may be back!Continue Reading
Finally sun!
The helicopter dropped us off on the snowcovered glacier, and we hiked up to the top of the cliff. Took a few shots of the view, and some panos with the 10.5 mm lens. The we scrambled down a boulder field to the “lake” which was quite a scene given that the boulders were the size of cars!
After reaching the base, we had lunch and enjoyed the view and the camaraderie. All the while our helicopter waited above on the snowpack.
The trick came in the hike back up there. Back through the boulders, a scree slope made soft and mushy and unstable due to the 3 rainy days previously! Got to the top of the snowpack and then skiied down to the heli. Not literally skiied of course, but being from Manitoba I know how to make light work of a snow hill!!!
These images are the ones I shot with my phone, once I get home and process the others I’ll post a gallery.
What do you think – was the scree scramble worth it?
Time well wasted…
It’s back to work for many of us – the summer holiday season is over for many and school and desks are the new normal for the next 3 months. So how did you spend the last long weekend of the summer?
I had a great time at Winnipeg Beach with good friends, enjoying the fine weather and the “sea shore” vibe of that strip of beaches along the west side of the lake. Veranda culture! Long large and airy verandas that face the lake, the full-on breeze sweeping its way inside to keep the happy occupants cool; and with the rushing and breaking of the waves who wouldn’t agree that this is a first class way to spend the long weekend.
Ouch
So it was a beautiful, calm but steamy prairie morning. Still hot and muggy from the day before. It was an early morning, and I was on the road early, but its was indeed a “moody manitoba morning.” But that would quickly change.Continue Reading
