Do you remember the Round Table Restaurant?
Back in the day when we were youngsters, it was among the best restaurants in Winnipeg. But it was the lounge that I recall best. As a kid I used to be fascinated by what looked like leaded glass windows – with white translucent glass panels, but the sun would seem to be shine through them no matter the time of day. Later on I figured out that they had special lights behind the “windows” to replicate the colour of sunlight. (photography stuff).
And much later, a rite of passage perhaps, (it was certainly a place where a young man would want to impress a young lady), I had a memorable first date in that same lounge. I wish I could remember all the details of that event, what I do remember is I had a bad cold but wanted to go so badly I pumped myself full of asprin and tylenol, I was scared to have anything to drink. But I am sure I did anyway. And I had an amazing time there that evening despite my feeble condition. And the universe unfolded as it should.
And now, the venerable Round Table is closing its doors. I’d love to go back for one last round in the lounge. It would seen appropriate to send the old Round Table off into the realm of “once upon a time.” A round and a table for 2 please …
