Do you know how much difference a small loan could make to someone’s small business?
If I told you that you could make a loan of $25.00 that would make an enormous difference in someone s life, and possibly enable them to change an entire commnunity, would you do it?
KIVA is a micro-loan organization that helps business people in developing countries grow their businesses. I have been a member for 3 years. The concept is simple: you loan money to an entreperenur of your choice after reading their bio and a brief business plan. In a few months time they repay your loan and you can withdraw it or reinvest it. it is not a scam or ponzi – you don’t earn any interest, you don’t make any moeny, and it is not an investment (at least not, in the financial sense!). But what you do get is a chance to help someone with ideas, actions, and the desire to succeed.
I’m challenging all photographers and any other of the socially-minded among you to join the nature-photography-central.com Kiva team! I have contributed $100.00 in loans to the team. It’s free to join and you can pick your own business person to loan money too. Once we have some core members I want to challenge other photographers to start their own teams and we can have a friendly challenge. You don’t need to be a photographer to join my team. You just want to help and have a measly 25 bucks to spare (you do get it back* ). And if you’re not enjoying the experience you can withdraw at anytime.

* Named as one of the top ideas in 2006 by the New York Times Magazine, Kiva enables microfinance institutions (MFIs) to raise debt capital directly from social investors via the Internet. Kiva provides MFIs 0% interest US dollar debt capital in exchange for client impact transparency on the internet. MFIs on-lend this capital at prevailing interest rates and keep the interest income. Losses arising from client default are borne by Kiva's social investor.
