Valentine’s Day has always seemed a rather fake and forced way to acknowledge love. But since it is the day, thought I’d do something that linked hearts and photography. Seems besides loving your Nikon there’s not much out there that could do the job. But I did find some great old romantically tinged tunes about the bond between relationships and photographs.
It might not be warm, but it’s hot
Smack in the middle of winter on the prairies. Frigid, car exhaust freezes instantly into fog so thick you can’t see the vehicle in front of you…
How about that!?
My world of chance – or is it coincidence? Whatever it is I still marvel that it unfolds as it does. Deepak Chopra , in his book “The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire” categorises his coincdences as tiny, medium, whoppers, and double-whoppers!
That random crossing of paths, to come crashing back into our history, totally out of the blue it would seem (of course Deepak would disagree!) -was it your creation or mine? Tiny, medium, whopper, or double-whopper coincidence? Time will tell. It certainly wasn’t nothing! 🙂
Another Happy New Year!
Well, here we are again – a new year starting.
2011 promises to be an interesting year photographically. The Nikon pundits are suggesting that there will be a replacement for the D300(s) this year, and hopefully they are correct. I’m also hoping for a D700 replacement, I think a second generation of these awesome cameras will be a monumental gift to the photographic community. I’m certainly pining for some new toys.
Personally, like most of us, I have made a few “resolutions” more like goals really, from the usual, getting in better shape etc. to the more obscure. A trip to the Arches National park and the American South West is in the works. This was spurred on by an iPhone app I saw on the App store and for a few bucks thought at the very least it would be good entertainment for those (rare) times that I showed up too early for a meeting!
However I became captivated with this area and now a “real life” trip is the result.
And my family…health is really the biggest thing we have and with the turmoil of the past year and a half I am going to spend more time with my parents (Aged Ps, as they like to call themselves!). That agonizing passage of time that seems to speed up the older we get is a cause for action on all counts for all of us.
Losing the genetic lottery is one thing but inevitable hand of fate that throws a speeding car into our lane, or that runs a red light at the precise time we enter the intersection…is not something that would sit well with me. But it just means we never know how long we have left.
So making amends, resolving unfinished business, and losing the baggage seems like an appropriate thing to do. Staying in the moment, and creating your future too must be a part of going forward. No more procrastination…Oh well at least I will give it my best shot 🙂 There are always a few loose ends to deal with.
So, let’s begin the journey, one shot at a time…Here’s to a splendid 2011.
Holiday High Gear!
Capturing holiday memories! There’s not much that a good camera can’t record these days! From the kids opening their gifts, to the celestial events in the winter sky, modern DSLRs can handle it all.
I was looking through some old boxes I retrieved from my parents, and looking at the old slides of Christmases past was a trip! They had great Christmas Eve dinners, and there was always more than one camera to record the festivities! Lots of photos. Lots of slides – so old skool!! I know that modern cameras do a much better job. Let’s take a look…Continue Reading
Sometimes I hate Nikon!
99% of the time I am a total Nikon fan…but this week, I am hating them.
Here’s why. As a former 35mm shooter of transparencies (slide film) I have thousands of film images the get digitized whenever I have time or the need arises. By far the tool for scanning that has the best combination of quality and price is the Nikon CoolscanV ED slide scanner. I bought mine years ago for around $1000 US, maybe a bit more. It is one of the most anti-obsolescent camera products I will ever own. Or so I thought…
One question
POI# 4
And then there is Jim. When I got my very first 35mm SLR (which I still have BTW) he would tolerantly let me “take pictures” of him anytime anywhere! Early morning even before coffee (yikes!) or, more formally, as I attempted to practice the finer points of portraiture.
As well as having almost infinite patience for these artistic quirks, Jim was a very handsome guy, – it was impossible to take a bad photo of him. For years I mistakenly attributed all those good photos of him to my emerging photographic talent, and I coasted on this grand deception for ages until, over time I actually did become a pretty good photographer. (And it wasn’t till much later a portrait pro pointed out the various flaws in my subsequent portrait photos, that I came to know the embarrassing truth – my early success was a fluke and the beauty was all Jim and not me.)
